Oriental Layered Map
Maps built in layers, engraved with the places that matter.
The work
It isn’t a catalog. Think of it as evidence. If you catch yourself thinking “I bet they could make…”, you’re probably right.

Maps built in layers, engraved with the places that matter.

A drink recipe that can't get ruined when someone spills a drink on it.

Sometimes the wood gets to decide what it wants to become.

Photographs and fine artwork engrave on slate in surprising detail.

Your logo deserves better than another coffee mug.

Milestones deserve something heavier than a paper banner.

Small details, kept quiet, so the piece stays timeless.

Custom artwork for the people who are hard to shop for.

Nobody asked the beetle. The beetle did great work.

Dried flowers, pens, or nothing at all.

Your words. Your joke. Your questionable sense of humor. Permanently burned into something.

Family crests, clan colors and team mascots, in wood.

Use it. Enjoy it. Don't baby it.
Nothing under that one yet. Which, honestly, is an invitation.
About the pictures: some of these are photographs. Some are AI renders of pieces that sold before anyone took a decent photo, and a couple are the designs themselves. They’re all labeled, and every one of them is something we can make again.
Don’t see it? That’s normal. Most of what we make started as somebody’s idea.

A 12-inch map of Oriental, NC built from seven laser-cut layers, with engraved streets and water depths taken from real NOAA soundings.
Oriental sits on the Neuse River just short of Pamlico Sound and calls itself the Sailing Capital of North Carolina, which makes it a good map: more water than land, and a town that hugs the edges.
Each layer is cut from its own sheet. The top one carries the land, with every street engraved into it. The five below are water, each a little deeper and darker than the last, cut from real depth soundings so the shading actually means something. Stack them flush and the harbor falls away into the river.

Slate coasters engraved with a cocktail, its recipe and a line of commentary. Eighteen designs so far, in sets or mixed to order.
Each coaster gets the glass, the recipe and a little editorial opinion. The Whiskey Sour’s is “A little sour. Like your ex.” The Martini is “Classy with bad decisions inside.”
So far: Negroni, Daiquiri, Paloma, Espresso Martini, Bloody Mary, Sangria, Cosmopolitan, Old Fashioned, Aperol Spritz, Long Island Iced Tea, French 75, Mai Tai, Martini, Margarita, Mojito, Moscow Mule, Manhattan and Whiskey Sour. Pick a set, mix your own, or send us the one your bar is known for.

Hand-turned pepper mills in purpleheart, banded with spalted maple and edged in braided cord.
Purpleheart comes off the lathe a fairly ordinary brown and turns purple as it meets light and air. The band in the middle is spalted maple, which gets its dark lines from fungus working through the wood before it was ever cut. Braided cord covers the seams.
Two shapes so far: tall and waisted, or short with a round cap. They look better as a pair, which works out, because salt exists.

The Statue of Liberty against a waving flag, laser engraved into natural slate.
Slate engraves light against dark, which suits detail like this: the folds of the robe, the rays of the crown, the stars in the flag. The shading comes from the laser itself. The harder it hits the stone, the paler that spot turns.

Our sample pieces, in slate and in marble with a wood top, engraved with a placeholder that says exactly what it's for.
These are our sample pieces, and they’re honest about it: weddings, corporate, logos, QR menus, monograms, bulk and B2B, right there on the piece.
Swap “Your design here” for your actual design and you’ve got a coaster set, a client gift, a table marker or a QR menu that doesn’t blow away.

United States of America, 250 years, 1776–2026: an eagle, Lady Liberty and the scales of justice, engraved in slate.
Made for the 250th. The layout borrows from old commemorative plaques: a banner across the top, an eagle up front and the dates set in a seal. All of the depth and shading comes from how the laser treats the stone.
Swap the eagle for your logo and the dates for yours, and it’s an anniversary plaque, a dedication stone or a sign for the clubhouse.

A turned urn in spalted maple and walnut with cross-laced leather bands, engraved with a name, a paw print and the years that mattered.
This one was designed for Sadie. The name is on the walnut lid, the name and the years are inside it, and a paw print is pressed into each leather band. None of it shouts. The idea was a piece that still looks right on a shelf ten years from now.
The body is spalted maple, turned between a walnut top and base, with the leather inlaid flush and laced with a cross stitch.

A custom birthday piece for a mountain biker: a rider in silhouette, a trail marker and a topo line that ends at the X.
Kathleen rides. So the art puts a rider on the ridge with pines and peaks behind, a wooden “Birthday Trail” sign pointing the way, and a dotted route across the topo lines to an X marking the spot.
Silhouette art like this is drawn to engrave and cut cleanly, so the same design can end up on paper, wood or slate.

A hand-turned urn in ambrosia maple under a dark wooden lid, with the streaks the beetles left running top to bottom.
Ambrosia maple gets its streaks from the ambrosia beetle, which tunnels into the tree and brings a fungus along for the ride. The stains follow the tunnels, so no two pieces come out alike and every one looks planned. It wasn’t. That’s the point.

A hand-turned vase in purpleheart with a spalted maple band and braided cord, to match the mills and the bowl.
The mills and the bowl needed a sibling. It holds dried flowers, pens or nothing at all, and still earns its spot on the shelf.

An engraved wooden sign listing everything we do, which turned out to be a lot of sign.
Slate coasters, glassware, cutting boards, keychains, wooden signs, pet memorials, wedding pieces and personalized gifts, in wood, slate, leather, glass, acrylic and metal. Yes, it’s an ad. It’s also a fair demonstration of what a laser does to a nice piece of wood.
Your design. Your logo. Your idea. We put it on stuff.

A carved heraldic shield: a horse and a wolf, back to back, over a blue and white saltire.
A horse and a wolf, back to back, over a blue and white saltire, with light and dark woods doing the work that paint would do on a flat crest.
If your family has a crest, send it. If it doesn’t, we can help you make one up. Nobody has to know.

A hand-turned purpleheart bowl banded with spalted maple and braided cord. Made to be used.
The same combination as the pepper mills: purpleheart, a band of spalted maple and braided cord at the seams. It’s finished to be used, not to sit on a shelf being dusted. Use it. Enjoy it. Don’t baby it.
